Eating and drinking near The Cypress

Two kinds of eating out live near here. The everyday kind is on Hubbell Avenue and over in Altoona. The night-out kind is a short drive into the city.

On Hubbell Avenue

Hubbell Avenue is lined with the places you go on a weeknight. Latin King, at 2200 Hubbell, has been an east-side Italian institution for more than seventy years. Bianchi's Hilltop, at 2820 Hubbell, is a family-run spot known for its pizza and onion rings. Both sit a short way down Hubbell toward downtown, and the corridor also carries Northern Lights Pizza, a Pizza Hut and the fast food and coffee you reach without planning.

In Altoona, a few miles east

The Altoona shopping brings its own run of restaurants. Johnny's Italian Steakhouse, at 550 Bass Pro Drive NW by the outlets, is about 2.9 miles east. Along 8th Street SW, about 2.3 miles east, are Applebee's at 3741 8th Street SW, Raising Cane's, Pancheros Mexican Grill, Wendy's and Arby's. A meal pairs easily with the Altoona shopping on the shopping page.

A night out downtown

For a bigger night, downtown Des Moines is about 5.0 miles southwest. The East Village, just across the river below the Capitol, and the Court Avenue district hold most of the restaurants, bars and breweries within a few blocks of each other. It is a straight run down Hubbell Avenue. Most homes here are two-bedroom, one-bath, about 860 square feet, with a stove and refrigerator included. Renovated homes have new kitchens and baths; classic homes keep their finishes and rent for less; Cypress II also has a few 430-square-foot one-bedrooms. Current rents sit on the availability page.
